Words from His Majesty the Fourth King of Bhutan

His Majesty the Fourth King of Bhutan Jigme Singye Wangchuk has stated that  “Through out the centuries the Bhutanese have treasured their natural environment and have looked upon it as the source of all life. This traditional reverence for nature has delivered us into the twentieth century with our environment still richly intact. We wish to continue living in harmony with nature and to pass on this heritage to our future generations”.

A beginning of Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project Authority was made for exploitation of the hydroelectric Power in Bhutan when the Agreement was signed between the Government of the Republic of India and the Royal Government of Bhutan concerning co-corporation in the field of hydroelectric power on 28th July 2006 and later a protocol to the Agreement was also signed on 16th March 2009. Authority comprises a Chairman and four Members nominated by the Royal Government of Bhutan and three Members nominated by the Government of India Ambassador of India to Bhutan, Ambassador of Bhutan to India, Member(Hydro), CEA, Member (D& R), CWC, Director General, DHPS RGoB, Director, Planning Commission, GoI are Permanent Invitees to the Authority Meetings. The Managing Director, MHPA is the Ex-Officio Secretary to the Authority. The Project Management is headed by the Managing Director, who is Supported by a Joint Managing Director, a Director (Technical) and a Director (Finance).



Adopt the best practices in the construction of environment friendly, state of the Art 720MW Hydropower Project on River Mangdechhu, at Trongsa.


Implement the Project as per Construction Schedule and Approved Budget and Ensure Quality of Construction with Minimal Damage to the Environment with timely commissioning and smooth Operation and Maintenance Transfer to DGPC as Operators.


Enhance energy security to the Nation and improve the quality of life of Bhutanese People by generating revenue from the sale of clean Hydropower to India.
